FOR AND AGAINST ESSAY:

Lowering the age teenagers get a driving licence:

The aim of this report is to consider the advantages and disadvantages of lowering, maintaining or increasing the age of getting a driving licence. There are some countries like Spain, where you can get a license when you are eighteen; or countries like the USA, where you can get a licence when you are just sixteen.

There are many reasons to lower the age at which you can get a licence. Nowadays, teenagers want to go outside at night earlier and come back home later. It would be a good reason to get a licence. Furthermore, teenagers have friends out from their born city, and parents spend all day driving their sons and daughtersfrom one place to another. Last but not least, it’s safer to drive a car than a motorbike.

However, not all the things are advantages. Firstly, teenagers are really unconscious and they do not respect traffic signals. Moreover, they want to drive really at high speeds on the road. Likewise, they suffer a lot of accidents and the car insurances for them are more expensive.

To sum up, there is equality between the advantages and disadvantages of decreasing the age to get a driving licence. As far as I am concerned, I think the government should maintain the law about getting a driving licence when people are eighteen.

DESCRIPITION OF A PLACE:

BAR LA PLAÇA:

My favourite bar in Berga is definitely Bar La Plaça. There are a lot of bars in Berga, about 120, but La Plaça is special. It is an old building in the old village, near the cinema. This bar is a great place to watch a football match with your friends.

The interior of the bar is really beautiful. The walls are covered with photographs of Patum and of the staff of the bar. There are also some pictures of famous musicians of many different styles: Bob Marley (reggae), Rolling Stones (rock), The Beatles (pop)...

The outside is also worth mentioning. It is a square called “Plaça del Forn”. If you want, you can drink something outside at the tables there are there. You can also smoke there.

The bar is famous all over Berga for the jazz concerts they organize. There are more than twenty-five types of beer on the menu, but it isn't all. You can also play cards or darts there.

However, you should know that you can't have dinner there. You just can eat a snack.

WRITING: A FILM REVIEW

THE CRAZIES:

I’m not a great fan of horror Films so I didn’t expect to enjoy The crazies. However, I was really pleasantly surprised by this horror film, made by the film company Paramount Pictures.

The film is set in a little village in the western area of the USA. The plot centres on a plague. Everyone who drinks water from the river gets ill and becomes a zombie. So the whole population of the village, except the sheriff, his wife and a couple of friends, become zombies. The two healthy couples will try to leave the village but it will be really difficult because everybody tries to kill them.

Timothy Olyphant plays the sheriff of the village. He is a brave man worried about the future of his pregnant wife. The film is good, despite the absence of music and sometimes special effects.

In short, “The crazies” is a good film but I can just recommend it to people who like horror films and people who want to have a good time with their friends.

THE EGYPTIAN REVOLUTION 4/2/11:

Finally, the Egyptian revolution has succeeded. After about twenty days when most of the population has been complaining about, the govern of the “president” since 1981, Mohamed Hosni Mubarak has resigned his power.

The revolution had taken place for eighteen days: all started on the 25th of January, a special day for Egyptians, when there were many demonstrations around the country showing the disagreement of the population versus Mubarak.

After the demonstrations some people started to go to Tahrir square, a huge square of Cairo, the capital of the country. They stayed the whole day claiming that the president left the government. The first day they were not many people but in the end they were thousands of people claiming freedom.

After all, the president left the government. It was on the 11th of February. Obviously, thousands of people went around the streets to celebrate the victory, but it is just the first step in order to transform Egypt in a democratic country.

Nowadays UNO is thinking of accusing Mubarak for making crimes against humanity.

According to politicians maybe now there will begin revolutions throughout Africa, claiming democracy, because many countries of this continent have had the same president for many years.

THE ASIATIC TSUNAMI

It was a quiet morning in 2004. Everyone was working and doing his things like an ordinary day. Many people were spending the day with their families or friends on the beach. The sun was shining in the sky.

It all started when some people saw a blue water line on the horizon. One of the viewers was a girl that remembered a school lesson about tsunamis. She advised everybody that they had to leave the beach, but nobody believed her.

The next moment a huge wave arrived at the coast. The people on the beach tried to escape from the tsunami but it was too late.

After a few minutes, all the coastal area was full of water. The tsunami killed more than 200,000 people and it destroyed a lot of houses and buildings.

This tsunami was the most terrifying natural disaster in Asia.

INFORMATIVE ESSAY

THE BEARDED VULTURE (EL TRENCALÒS): an endangered animal

The aim of this essay is learn more things about a bird called “el trencalòs”. It’s the strangest vulture that we have in Catalonia. Nowadays there are only 33 couples of vultures living in Catalonia.

“El trencalòs” is a type of vulture. It lives in areas from 600m. to 2200m high. Like all its vultures, it eats rests of dead animals. It kills them: it takes its preys with its paws and flies from a high height. Then, it drops the animal to the ground.

This animal is endangered. The most important reason is that many people hunted them some years ago. Another reason is that this animal eats wild animals like chamois and grazing animals as sheep, and in the last years there haven’t been many chamois because the weather hasn’t been good and they haven’t eaten enough to survive.

The government and other organisations are working to get that “el trencalòs” raise in number in Pirineus: they are creating special places where the members of the organisations put food for the vulture. The government has passed a new law that says that the electrical networks that pass in the places where “el trencalòs” lives must be destroyed and they must pass for another place.

Nowadays, “el trencalòs” is an endangered animal in our country. However, everyday there are more laws and more activities in order to avoid that this animal disappearS from Pirineus. I hope that these laws and activities produce results and in a few years we can see more “trencalosos” in the mountains than now.

OUR ORAL PRESENTATION

MY ENGLISH LEVEL

My name is Marc Borrellas Sabrià. I’m 15 and next week I will travel to Sweden because I’m participating in an exchange. Now I’m going to talk about my English classes during this year.

During this year we have done many activities. The activities I liked most have been creating our own blog and cooking a pizza with my classmate Jordi. The activities I didn’t like have been singing the Christmas songs and the radio programme because I didn’t participate in it.

The activity done in class that I have enjoyed the most has been watching a comedy film entitled “Because I said so”. I passed a good time watching the film.

The activity done in class that I have enjoyed the least has been reading the book called “The Canterville ghost”. From my point of view it is a boring book so I didn’t enjoyed it.

About my oral activity, I think it was well. I made it with Pau Moneo and Jordi Nadeu. We talked about Cercs. I looked at my audience and I didn’t use any type of notes. I didn’t know how to pronounce “quilòmetres quadrats” (km2). Now I know it is called square kilometres.

I hope my group gets a high mark.

My blog it is created using a standard template. It has some photos in each publication and links from webs that I think that they are interesting. I have uploaded all the activities I have done.

In conclusion, my English has improved this year. Personally, I think I have improved my vocabulary. I hope learn more English the next year.

MY CHILDHOOD:

I always remember that, when I was a child, I played football in the school’s team.

As I was tall, I played as a defender. I wasn’t a very good football player but I ran a lot. We played in Berga’s pitch against other school teams from Berga, Gironella and Puig-Reig.

Once we got to the final. We played against Dominiques’ team and we lost 4-1. We lost the match because they were better but also because our goalkeeper got injured and a boy that normally played as a forward, had to play as goalkeeper.

Nowadays the majority of people who played football in my team don’t do it any more. When I look at photos of it I am thrilled and surprised because many people who played football in this team they hate playing football.

YELLOW SUBMARINE:

My favourite song in English is “Yellow Submarine”. The group who wrote it was “The Beatles”. The Beatles were born in Liverpool in 1960.

It had four members: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Star.

They played rock-pop music. They had a lot of famous songs: “Hey Jude”, “Cometogheter”, “Yesterday”, “Help”, “Imagine”, “Yellow Submarine”…

Nowadays, the group doesn’t play. Two of the members died: John Lennon (he was murdered in NY) and G.Harrison

The song was written by John Lennon. It’s about they embarkation on a submarine and everything is fantastic and perfect in it.

I like this song because it has good lyrics and because it explains the life without problems. When I listen to the song, I feel thrilled and satisfied. I usually listen to this song at home when I’m sad or I’ve had a bad day (the tittle of another of my favourite songs by REM).

I think that the biggest negative aspect of the song is that it doesn’t show the life like it is. In the real life you have problems and things you must do and solve.

I like the original videoclip of the song recordered by “Beatles”. I think that the videoclip is connected to the lyrics because it takes place in a submarine.

To sup up, I think that the song “Yellow Submarine” is only one of the long list of best songs of probably the best music groups that has ever existed.

WHAT WILL BE MY LIFE LIKE IN 20 YEARS?

In twenty years I will be tall and a little fat (I’ll have a pot belly). I’ll have very short curly hair. I’ll be a sociable and a moody person and I hope to be clever and temperate.

I will live in Berga with my wife. First we are going to live in a flat because we aren’t going to have enough money to build a house but after that, we will live in a house. I’ll have children: I suppose one or two.

I don’t know what I’m going to be but I’ll have my own business and it’s going to be in Berga or very near. I’ll work hard in the early years because I want the business to succeed. Then, when I earn enough money, I’ll employ a manager who looks after the office and I’ll stay at home enjoying my life (sleeping for many hours, playing games, watching my favourite programmes and quizzes on TV…) and controlling the business but from home and I won’t spend a lot of hours working.  I suppose too that I’ll have to do domestic works such as cooking, sweeping, ironing, cleaning the floor…

I’ll have a very busy lifestyle but I want to be healthy so I’m going to do sport every week and every day if I can. I’ll like to practise sports but especially basketball and cycling. If I feel strong enough, I will try to play football too but I’ve never played it and I suppose that it will be difficult to learn when I am an adult.

diumenge, 29 de novembre del 2009

It was a dark and stormy night when this story happened. I was alone at home and suddenly the light went off. At the beginning I thought that it was a normal breakdown but after that, I could check that it wasn’t a normal breakdown.

I started to hear some noises of steps on the 1st floor. I was very afraid but I decided to go to the 1st floor to know what was happening. I was taking a knife to have a weapon if the robbers attacked me, when someone closed the door of the kitchen.

At this moment I decided to run to my room to take the house keys and went out. While I was taking the keys someone touched me. I was removing my knife when the light returned. Then I had a big surprise. There weren’t any robbers in my house. The “robbers” were some cats that had been able to enter my house through an opened window.

DAILY LIFE

My name is Marc Borrellas Sabrià. I’m 14 years old. I live in Berga with my sister Laia and my mum Meritxell. My sister is younger than me, she is 11 years old and she is studying in a primary school. My mum is a doctor and she works in Manresa.

On one normal day of my life I wake up at 7.30. I have breakfast and I go to High School on foot. I stay in the school from 8.30 to 14.00. Then I go home to have lunch. In the afternoon I return to High School for two hours: from 15.30 to 17.30. When the school finishes, I often  do extra activities: basketball, music, English…                                                                                              When I finish the extra activities I go  home. There I have dinner with my family. After that I do my homework and I watch  TV.

During my free time I meet my friends and we have a good time. My principal hobby is playing basketball but I have a lot: do different sports, meet friends, watch F1, play the drum…
